The 47-year-old Poison frontman and diabetes activist has left the hospital more than a week after suffering a potentially catastrophic stroke.

bret-michaels.jpgIn true rock star form, Bret Michaels didn’t show up at his own press conference Tuesday. But he could have.

The Poison frontman and fierce champion of diabetes research has beaten the odds almost two weeks after undergoing major surgery to repair brain damage caused by a subarachnoid hemorrhage. According to doctors, the 47-year-old has left the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

“He’s just one of those lucky people, the 20 percent or so who have a subarachnoid hemorrhage who make a complete recovery, and are able to resume all of their normal activities,” Dr. Joseph Zabramski, chief of cerebrovascular surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, said during Tuesday’s press conference.

“I really expect that he will fortunately make a 100 percent recovery.”

Michaels’ prospects weren’t so hot when he was hospitalized on April 22 with a headache that he reportedly described as “getting hit with a baseball bat again and again.” The condition proved to be a type of stroke the Merck Manual describes as having a 50 percent survival rate during the first few weeks after incident.

The survival rate is even lower if a brain aneurysm — the weakening and widening of an artery — follows the stroke. Repeated tests on Michaels have failed to turn up any evidence of an aneurysm, say doctors.

But the fight of Michaels’ life isn’t totally over. There’s still a blood clot in his brain that doctors say will take 7 to 10 days to completely dissolve. It’s a painful process that causes back pain and headaches, and it’s particularly painful for Michaels due to his diabetes. Unlike others with the condition, known as chemical meningitis, diabetics cannot fight the pain with steroids because of the drug’s affect on glucose levels. But the good news Tuesday far outweighs the bad.

“Right now he should be celebrating,” Zabramski said.

Knowing Bret, he probably is.

The rocker is in “good spirits” after the brain hemorrhage he suffered last week, but doctors say his recovery may take weeks or even months.

bret_michaels.pngBret Michaels’ family, friends and fans breathed a much-awaited sigh of relief when they learned that his condition is slowly improving after undergoing major brain surgery last week.

Doctors for the 47-year-old former Poison front man and top Celebrity Apprentice 3 contender said his recovery will be slow, but that he “is very lucky, as his condition could have been fatal,” his tour manager, Janna Elias told fans on his website, BretMichaels.com on April 27. Due to the severity of the hemorrhage, Michaels continues to remain hospitalized in an intensive care unit in critical but stable condition at an undisclosed hospital, she said.

Despite his ordeal, Michaels is conscious, talking slowly and in good spirits, his rep told People April 28.

Ten days after the Rock of Love star underwent an emergency appendectomy, he was rushed to the hospital again on April 22 with a headache he said felt like getting “hit with a baseball bat again and again,” a source told People earlier this week.

His massive headache came from a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of stroke that causes bleeding in the fluid-filled spaces around the base of the brain, wrote Elias. “It presents itself suddenly as the sound of a loud gunshot or thunderclap at the back of the head causing severe cranial pain and muscle spasms,” she said.

With further testing and rehabilitation, she said, doctors “are hopeful that Bret will gradually improve as the blood surrounding the brain dissolves and is reabsorbed into his system, which can be a very painful recovery and take several weeks to months.”

Michaels remains under 24-hour observation in the ICU, but “is in positive spirits,” she wrote. “He is responding well to tests and treatments.”

An Unsettling Complication

Even though Michaels’ condition has stabilized, he faces a new medical setback — seizures caused by a lack of sodium in the body, which is a common side effect from a brain hemorrhage, Elias wrote.

Still, she remains optimistic. “Even though today was a minor setback doctors remain hopeful for a full recovery and plan to release more specific information next Monday,” she said.

While some people are speculating that the stroke may have come after he was struck in the head by a falling piece of the set at the Tony awards last June, he will undergo further tests throughout the week to try to detect the exact cause of the rupture, said Elias. “Coupled with the fact that Michaels is a lifelong Type 1 diabetic and has recently undergone emergency appendectomy surgery while on tour in San Antonio, he will remain monitored closely by his medical team to make sure no complications occur from the diabetes.”

Friends Rally for Their Beloved Pal

Friends of Michaels from around the world have come forth to wish him well. Sharon Osbourne, who has been a friend of the singer’s for 30 years and stars with him on Apprentice, told US Magazine, “It’s devastating, and it makes you feel all these different things. Your heart goes out to his family, your heart goes out to him. He’s the nicest guy in the world. And then you start thinking about your own mortality. You start thinking, ‘Oh my God.’ It just makes you appreciate how lucky we all are.”

Apprentice honcho Donald Trump said on Today that Michaels “would work so hard, maybe harder than anybody else. And he’s doing well.”

Michaels’ longtime friend and guitar player in the Bret Michaels Band, Pete Evick, thanked fans on Michaels website for their outpouring of support, saying “we who are closest to Bret are overwhelmed with the amount of love and well wishes he is receiving. I know that everyone is waiting for some official news, however we just can’t give any right now. This is a time for family, a time for healing and a time for love.”

He praised Michaels for his work ethic, saying “I thought I was a hard worker. I didn’t understand that a man ten years older than me, battling a lifelong war with juvenile diabetes, more fame than most, and more money than he knows what to do with, could possibly get up every day with more drive and passion than myself. I was wrong! I didn’t understand what it meant to be a loyal friend. The kind that would do anything you ever needed without even asking why, what, who or where.

“Bret is the kind of guy that wakes up every day and treats it like it is his first, and may be his last,” he wrote. “He is full of passion, energy and love. But most of all, he is a survivor. Against the odds of a critical music industry, or battling a crippling disease, over and over again Bret has come out on top and ahead of the game. I personally expect nothing less from him in this situation.”

A New Michaels’ Song Released

To thank fans for their support, Evick released a “teaser” from Michael’s upcoming album, Custom Built, on the Web Page Audio portion of Michaels website. Evick released part of a song called “Wasted Time,” which he writes is “full of Bret Michaels’ emotion and heart. While not the final mix, I took some of the vocal we have laid down on the bus during the tour and comped together a piece of NEW MUSIC for you all. I believe all the fans will agree with me that this teaser is an amazing song. I hope you all use it, like I have this week, to remind you how amazing my great friend Bret is.”

Here is an update on Bret’s health from Tonic.com

Fans around the world — and here at Tonic — are praying for Bret Michaels, a longtime champion of diabetes research and awareness, who is fighting for his life after suffering a brain hemorrhage Thursday night.

bret_michaels.jpgBret Michaels, the former Poison front man, the star of VH!’s Rock of Love and a top contender on the current season of NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice 3, remains in critical condition after being rushed to an undisclosed hospital Thursday night due to a massive brain hemorrhage.

Michaels, 47, who had suffered excruciating headaches in the days before the hemorrhage, is under “intense observation,” as doctors run tests to determine the cause of the subarachnoid hemorrhage or bleeding at the base of his brain stem, PEOPLE.com reports. “It will be touch and go for the next few days while he is under intense observation,” a source told PEOPLE on Thursday.

Doctors are trying to determine if the hemorrhage was possibly the result of a recently performed emergency appendectomy, or complications from Michaels’ Type 1 Diabetes, which has plagued him since he was a child.

While some reports said that Michaels’ condition had improved in the days following the hemorrhage, his rep told PEOPLE.com Saturday, “There are several incorrect reports on Bret’s condition. Bret remains in critical condition at an undisclosed location. Further tests are being run and information will be updated in the coming days.”

The hemorrhage came ten days after he was rushed to a hospital for an emergency appendectomy on April 12 in San Antonio, Texas, just before he was supposed to perform at Sea World for his “Custom Built” solo tour. “After the fact, they told me that if I had gone onstage like I wanted to, it likely would have ruptured and I could have died,” he wrote on Fancast.com after the surgery.

He blogged on Fancast.com that the surgery took a lot out of him. “As I write this, I’m feeling pretty bad … to tell you the truth,” he wrote. “When you’re not planning on having a body part ripped out of you, it can be a shock to the system. While the doctors are amazing in San Antonio, there is just no way around the fact that getting your appendix out HURTS. I have a pretty good threshold for pain, but this one hurts.

“I don’t know how much longer I will be under medical supervision. I’ve spoken to several doctors and they all seem to be impressed with the condition I have been able to keep myself in as a juvenile diabetic. But a lot of extra care needs to be taken to make sure my body heals correctly. It’s no secret I love my kids, my life, and being on the road, so I want to make sure I do everything I can now to make sure I can continue that later. They say it can take four to six weeks to recover, but maybe longer for a diabetic.”

He wasn’t feeling much better the day before the hemorrhage. “I’m feeling right about in the middle right now on a scale of 1 to 10,” Michaels wrote on Fancast.com. “I’m not 100% yet … I have to get my blood sugar back in order, because it’s been all over the place because every day I’ve been real active and you’re not supposed to move around yet.”

bret_michaels_2.jpgA Fierce Champion of Diabetes Research and Awareness

As someone who has battled diabetes most of his life, Michaels has used his fame to raise money for diabetes research and to raise awareness about the disease. On the first episode of Apprentice, he raised $100,000 for the charity of his choice, The American Diabetes Association — more than any other celebrity on the show so far — when he led the men’s team to victory as its project manager. “What an amazing win,” he told The American Diabetes Association’s Diabetes Forecast afterward. “I was glad I wasn’t first to be fired. Most importantly, the whole purpose was to raise money for diabetes — not only awareness but for the charity. I think one of the biggest parts of diabetes — while we’re looking for a cure — is to help people who have already got it.”

Michaels has hosted and attended dozens of diabetes fundraisers during his career. Most recently, in October 2009, Michaels walked to find a cure as the honorary spokesman for the American Diabetes Association’s StepOut event at the South Street Seaport in New York City.

At the time, Michaels asked fans on Facebook to join him “in supporting this cause that is near and dear to all of our hearts here at Michaels Entertainment. As you may or may not know Bret has been diabetic since the age of six. This disease affects not only his life but so many others on a daily basis. Currently there is no cure.”

He told writer Bobbi Dempsey that he also likes to helps people with diabetes on a personal level. He told Dempsey that he likes to treats fans with diabetes to special backstage events and one-on-one meetings in which he talks to them about how he copes with life as a diabetic.

A Rock Star Father’s Love…and Concern

Finding a cure for diabetes and raising as much money as possible for research took on more importance than ever for Michaels when he learned on the April 11 episode of Apprentice (which was taped months earlier) that his 9-year-old daughter, Raine, had been diagnosed as borderline diabetic.

The news brought him to tears. “I literally found out while I was [filming it],” he told Diabetes Forecast. “It left me at a big fork in the road: As a responsible father, you leave [the show] then and there, but at same time I knew this was the whole purpose. The irony is I’m fighting to show people you can live a great, normal life with diabetes.”

Michaels, who is scheduled to receive an honorary “Father of the Year” award at the American Diabetes Association Gala in Los Angeles, (he is also dad to four-year-old Jorja Bleu) set the record straight about his daughter’s condition on Fancast after the episode aired.”People have been asking about my daughter Raine, and here’s the deal,” he wrote. “She has been diagnosed as borderline diabetic, which is symptomatic to leading to diabetes. She tested a few times positive for sugar or glucose in her urine and then they went in and did actual tests, other than just peeing on a stick. It happened to her when she was 3 and 4 and I thought it had gone away, but it happened again now at age 9. Her weight was changing; she lost a bunch of weight. I knew when I was going in to do ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ that something was up, and when I got the call, I just wasn’t mentally prepared to hear it. I thought they would just tell me that she’s a kid and her body is changing and it’s okay.

“She doesn’t need any shots yet. It’s just diet and pills for her now. This is how ironic that I’m on a show fighting to show people that if you are dealt the diabetes cards, you can deal with it. But when it’s your own child, it’s a completely different reaction. She was scared when she asked if she had to take a bunch of shots like me. That’s what got me. I told her, ‘Look. If you are, look at your dad. I’ve rocked it 41 years with diabetes. You’ll be okay.’ We got real positive about it. She’s on a strict diet and she’s an active kid anyway, but now she’s really watching her health. Hopefully she’ll never have a Type 1 diabetes. It makes me fight even harder on this show to help find a cure for this.”

Winning $100,000 dollars for the American Diabetes Association was the ultimate in prizes for the life-long diabetic, but Bret’s luck didn’t stop there. To make the birthday celebration even sweeter, Bret’s new single “Nothing To Lose” featuring Miley Cyrus turned in as the #3 most added song nationally on HOT AC radio stations, beating out the likes of Lady Gaga and Bon Jovi and tying Country sensation Taylor Swift!

Currently Bret is performing in front of sold out crowds on his Roses and Thorns solo tour and finishing up his new CD Custom Built. Celebrity Apprentice premiered last night on NBC with 8.3 million viewers watching. Tune in to Rachel Ray on March 17th as Bret chats with Rachel and performs “Nothing to Lose” acoustically. The show airs at 10am in NYC on ABC and 2pm on CBS in LA.
